At some point in time we have all heard the expression, the first impression is a lasting one. One of the ways we may make that first impression, whether we intend to or not, is by our choice of clothing. Styles of dress are as varied as there are options to choose from in the world. However, there are definitely some occasions where even your newest tee shirt and best jeans just will not fit with the dress code. When this is the case our options may become more refined. This does not mean however, we have nothing to wear.  Women who choose to put on a dress have many options to choose from depending on the occasion or event they are attending. One of those options is the classic cocktail dress.

This style of formal wear for women dates back to the 1930s. Fashion has certainly changed since then. However, some of the standards remain as important today as they were back then. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when searching for your next dress:

• Consider the time of day the event will be taking place. If it is early in the day, you may be able to wear lighter colors. However, for events held in the late afternoon or evening, darker colors, like black, would be your best choice.
• Choose the right style not only to fit the event, but also your personal taste. This is going to be a dress that you will hopefully wear on more than one occasion.
• Consider the climate you will be in when looking at fabrics and styles. If you are going to be in warmer climates, lighter weight fabric would work best. However, for cooler climates a heavier fabric might be the way to go.
• Don’t forget the shoes. Ladies, this is the time when you put on your favorite heels and have some fun!

Now with those tips in mind, let’s look at two different occasions where one may find this classic look. With the New Year ahead, if your plans include any type of party where more formal attire may be required, this would be the perfect dress for the occasion.  To add a little sparkle to an evening party, you may want to consider a dress with embellishments like sequins on it. When in doubt it does not hurt to double check with your host concerning the dress code for the event.

If you are looking to escape winter’s bitter cold temperatures, it may be the perfect time of year to step aboard a cruise ship. You may want to research a destination like the Bahamas or somewhere else warm to spend some time during these next few months.  The packing list for such an adventure will no doubt be long. However, one item you will want to make sure makes it into your luggage is a dress. This will come in handy when you take part in the activities on semi-formal or formal nights aboard the ship. Make sure you remember your shoes and all accessories you plan on wearing with the dress! You do not want to be in the middle of the ocean and realize you forgot something.
